As a photographer there are lots of things we need to consider when we talk to a new potential client and lots we need to learn to make your session the best it can possibly be. As a client you should know just as much as we do about your photographer. Before booking your session with a photographer...
Here are 5 things you should know first.
1. Communication
There is nothing worse than bad communication, even more so if you have paid for an investment such as your photoshoot. Make sure that you and your photographer are communicating well and that you know exactly what you are getting for your experience with them. Photographers can get super busy, and can sometimes take a while to get back to people, or if their editing time is going to be too long for your time frame, maybe that photographer isn't a good match for you. Knowing things in advance and getting a quick response from your photographer goes a long way, making your experience with them flawless. For me, working two jobs makes the communication side a little harder, I always respond to messages and enquiries the same day. Other admin needs are usually done on Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends.
2. Comfort
This is the person you are going to be spending your free time with, the person whose controlling the outcome of your photoshoot. If you are not comfortable with this person, it will show in the photos. No-one particularly likes their photo being taken, so if you're uncomfortable this will make it harder for you to be relaxed. This is why I like the natural style, although guidance will be given if I think something needs to be adjusted slightly, I always like families or children to just settle and be relaxed as if the camera isn't on you. After all this is your investment so it should all be about your comfort.
3. Style
Natural, Posed or Both. Everyone has a different style, even as a client there will be a style that you favour. The best way to capture the style you love, is by choosing a photographer that loves that same style. If you hire someone who only shoots posed photos, you won't capture any in the moment photos where you're being left to do what you want like wise with a natural photographer, they may not capture a photo of all of you looking at a camera smiling. I do a mixture of both, (check out my other blog on my style) as I like my sessions to be totally relaxed and for no-one to think they have to do something to make a picture perfect. I give a variety of posed and unposed, so you capture every moment of the time spent with your family.
4. Prices
This is an investment you have made, you wouldn't buy a computer without looking at the price of it, so don't let booking a photographer any different. You should know exactly how much you are paying, what you get for that price and when your final payment is due. Photographers vary in price, due to experience, preference and overall choice. Theres so many varieties in price, and even policies on when they expect their final payment. Make sure you know what is included and what you may need to buy separately. E.G. Digitals, Prints. Be sure to check this! My prices are chosen at this price to cover all the time I put into your sessions. I like my final payment for most of my sessions to be made 7 days before the session date. When you book in advance this allows you to know the deadline on when your payment is due.
5. Their Work
Make sure you have seen their work! This is such a big part of choosing your photographer. Many go on recommendation, or just a few photos. Ask your photographer for images that are similar to the situation you are going to be in. This is the best way to make sure that both you and the photographer understand exactly what it is you're going for. Photographers showcase their work, and are always too happy to show you examples of what they have achieved. I know I love showing off the work I have produced, to reassure you that I can capture the memories that you want to treasure forever. Be sure that you are on the same page, way before your session date!
Make sure your photographer is the perfect one for you!
