Children & Photography

Now there is nothing more precious than a photo of your little one. Some of you may think your children are not "well behaved" enough for a photoshoot. You may think it really wouldn't be worth the time to book a session. Well this blog is to help you realise that you should give it a go anyway. All children get bored easily and want to do what they like. This doesn't mean you should lose out on the opportunity of having some lovely photos of your babies.

These are my top 5 tips for preparing your child and yourself for a photoshoot:

1. Talk about where you are going and what you are coming to do.

Bringing a child into a new place for the first time can be very daunting. Make sure you are preparing your little ones at least a week before. Get them ready to come into a new place with bright lights and someone they have never met before. Let them know how much fun it’s going to be, and how we want to see their cheekiest smiles. But remind them it’s okay if they don’t want to as well!

2. Bring a favourite toy or comforter

At the end of the day we want this experience to be super fun for both you and your little ones. Bringing their favourite toy or comforter for them can make them settle faster. If they want them in the photos this is also okay - I have ways of making sure they’re not in the photos. However, sometimes adding their toys in can make for an awesome photo.

3. Don’t put too much pressure on the session

If your little one doesn’t want to sit. That’s okay! If they don’t want to smile... thats fine! If they want to run around for 10 minutes... let them. I will always find a way to get a few smiley shots even if most of your session are natural shots. Just remember the more pressure you put on a child, the more they will rebel.

4. Let me know what they are into and what triggers those smiles

Knowing what your little one enjoys the most, means that I can adapt your session to make it as easy as possible on everyone. By telling me in advance what they like or what noise or word can make them smile, will make the session flow smoothly from the start.

5. Have fun.

This session is about making memories, and by stressing out before the session as well as during it- will result in your little one reacting the way you don’t want them too. Children feed off your energy so even if you think they are misbehaving, believe me when I say it’s not as bad as you think, stay calm and let me see if I can convince them into doing a few photos. Working with children for the last 8 years has helped me with any tricky situations we may encounter.

What to take from this blog:

Do the shoot!!

Don’t talk yourself out of booking a session because of what might happen. Children are unpredictable, your little ones may even surprise you and be full of smiles all the way through your session. I am always here to talk as much as you want before your session, so please take advantage of me being there to make your session perfect for you.

Lauren :)
