Every photoshoot requires different props but there are essentials that cover every photoshoot.
My top 10 things that are always in my bag for a photoshoot...
1. Camera
This is clearly an obvious one, but a good quality camera is something you can't go wrong with. Although it doesn't have to be the flashiest of cameras its important you know how yours works. the more comfortable you are with your camera the less you have to worry about during the session.
2. SD Card
Make sure it is in your camera! A couple of times there have been times where I have started to do test shots and realised that it wasn't in my camera. With computers like Apple Mac's you now have a different adapter for everything, it's very easy to leave your SD Card in the adapter!
Also make sure you have a back up SD Card, there is nothing more frustrating than having your SD Card fill up halfway through a photoshoot!
3. Spare Battery
This is one of the first things I bought as a new photographer. Before I had even started my business I had a spare one, for holidays. You carry a portable charger for your phone so why wouldn't you buy a spare for your camera. It's one thing you will regret if you don't have it. Never run out of battery during a session.
4. Different Lenses
I only have one different Lens and I always use it in every shoot. My "Nifty Fifty' 50mm lens is perfect for family sessions and make my photos just perfect. I don't always use it the whole shoot, but I will always make sure it is with me.
5. Music
With every photoshoot I do, whether it is inside or outside, wether I use it or not. I always have a portable speaker and a playlist ready. I often ask my clients, especially children, if they have a favourite song so that they can have fun during the photoshoots. If you use Spotify - much like myself, remember to download them so you have access to the playlist everywhere.
6. Bubbles
1...2...3...Pop! There is nothing better than bubbles for a photoshoot. Not only do they make for an amazing photo but they get smiles, giggles and pure excitement out of any child. I always have more than one set... small, big and a bubble gun. This makes the children go crazy - creating the most amazing photos!
7. Business Cards
Always a last minute rush for me to remember to put these in the bag! I often don't have enough printed, but this is the one goal I have. Theres no better way to advertise your business than to give out business cards. Always make sure you have a few in every bag, you never know when you will meet your next potential client.
8. Examples of Your Products
Prints, Albums, Frames and more... I always have some sort of product to be able to show my client what their photos can look like. This can push sales as it shows them the options they have as well as giving them a clear idea on what the product will look like.
This is also a great way for you to show off all your work - you never know, they may see a photo from a session they didn't know you provided and may book!
9. Props
Every session has different props, however most of my sessions I will always carry a few of my favourites. These include, flowers, crochet hearts and a book. These are great as they focus the children on something other than the camera. They are also very easy to carry around which is great for my outdoor photoshoots.
10. Camera Strap
This one seems silly as it's one thing that comes with the camera. But having the right strap for the right session makes it flow so much easier. I have my long strap for the majority of my sessions, but for my newborn sessions I often use my wrist strap. I always carry both, just incase the session changes and I feel it'll work better with the other strap.
These are just a few of the millions of things that you can use to help grow your photography business and help your photoshoots flow smoothly. I would love to hear what your top 10 are...
Lauren
